Animal feed and livestock are huge business in the world, for European Union, the feed safety is crucial for them to monitor due to the accidents occurred such as mad cow disease back in 1980s and beginning on 1990s. Almost 500,000 cows infected during the outbreak due to prions protein found in United Kingdom and 24 countries.
The GMP+ Feed Certification scheme was set up and established in 1992 by the Dutch feed industry in feedback to different severe incidents affect contamination in feed materials. Although its foundation as a Dutch national scheme, it has developed to turn into an international scheme that is govern by GMP+ International in association with numerous international stakeholders. As a latest record until January 2019 GMP+FSA certified companies in the world is 17,647 from 84 countries. And Malaysia’s companies are total 105 mainly to export to EU countries.
The HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) obligations in the GMP+ standard and requirements are broadly based on the HACCP criteria as have in the Codex Alimentarius. Concurrently, based on recent understanding (as ISO22000 – Food Safety Management System), some adjustments and extensions were comprised in the HACCP prerequisite and requirements.
The animal feed sector is already adopted to effort with amplification to assure animal feed safety. The animal feed regulations and the GMP+ Feed Safety Assurance module (GMP+ FSA) already comprise with an extensive of quality requirements for animal feed. This involvement sector all-around measures.
Hazard can be interpreted as a contamination or adulteration of animal feed, or a situation contribute to contamination of animal feed, with potential negative hazardous implications and effects for human or animal health.
